“...the most beautifully written accounts of it...give one no idea of it at all...so you will never know what Petra is like until you come out here...till you have seen it you have not had the glimmering of an idea how beautiful a place can be.”

- T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) writing to his childhood friend, E.T. Leeds about Petra (1914) -

More than a "Then and Now" book, this labor of love represents an exploration of time and change across the iconic archaeological city of Petra, Jordan -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. In the early 1920s Sir Alexander Kennedy, a retired civil engineer armed only with a field camera of the day, captured the Rose Red City's magnificent features: dramatic stone facades, sweeping vistas, and hewn carvings, shedding light on what was then a mostly untouristed region.

A hundred years later, with a modern field camera, I retraced Sir Kennedy's footsteps using repeat photography --meticulously replicating his (historic) images of the landscape and monuments he documented. The result allows us to visualize the profound resiliency of the indomitable Rose Red City through modern imagery and observe the influences humans have had on the landscape for generations.

Petra Rephotographed takes the reader on an historic trek, incorporating precise repeat imagery of the past and showcasing the changes and evolution of Petra's iconic monuments and timeless landscapes. Enjoy the journey!
